Indonesia April 2021: Toyota Kijang Innova leads in market almost back to pre-pandemic level

The Toyota Kijang Innova is #1 in Indonesia in April.

New vehicle wholesales in Indonesia shoot up 902.5% year-on-year in April to 78.908, sending the year-to-date total up 9.1% to 265.934. April 2021 is down just -6.1% on two years ago in April 2019 (84.029). Retail sales are up 227.5% year-on-year to 79.499 and up 5.9% year-to-date to 257.953. Compared to two years ago (80.622), retail sales fare even better than wholesales at -1.4%, meaning the Indonesian retail market has virtually returned to pre-pandemic levels.

All evolutions below are vs. April 2019. In the wholesales brands ranking, Toyota (-20.8%) easily holds onto the top spot but drops to 29.5% share vs. 30.4% so far this year whereas Daihatsu (-1.6%) outpaces the market and lifts to 20.1% share vs. 19.2% YTD. Mitsubishi (+39.8%) posts by far the best performance in the Top 5 whereas Honda (-27.1%) is in dire straits and Suzuki (+5.5%) edges up. Below, Wuling (+63.8%) leaps to 3.2% share, its second best market share ever in Indonesia below the 5.3% it hit in December 2019. Hyundai (+94.9%), BMW (+60.8%), Isuzu (+29.7%), Mercedes (+29.5%), Mazda (+28.6%) and Fuso (+27.8%) are also very dynamic. Retail-wise, Wuling (+64%), Mazda (+62.8%) and Isuzu (+24.2%) shine again.

Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Kijang Innova (+34.3%) celebrates its first monthly win in at least 8 years, leaping to a fantastic 7.9% share vs. 5.6% so far this year (#6). The Mitsubishi Xpander (+54%) also excels and is up three spots on March and its year-to-date ranking to #2. Leader last month for the first time in a year, the Toyota Avanza (-40.8%) drops back to third place for the month but advances to #2 year-to-date. Still in the year-to-date pole position, the Honda Brio (+14.8%) is down one spot on March to #4. Both the Suzuki Carry Pikap (+42.6%) and Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (+66.7%) post stellar result at #5 and #6 respectively whereas the leader of a year ago, the Daihatsu Sigra (-35.3%) endures a steep fall. Notice also the Daihatsu Terios (+112.9%) and Wuling Confero S (+233.2%) further down This month we welcome the Toyota Raize at #45 and its twin the Daihatsu Rocky at #65.
