Canada April 2021: Market up 254.4% on 2020 but down -10% on 2019

Mazda sales are up 9.5% on April 2019.

According to local consultancy DesRosiers Automotive, at 162.455 units the Canadian new light vehicle market is up 254.4% year-on-year in April as April 2020 was a lockdown month. However unlike in the U.S. where volumes are now above pre-pandemic levels, this is still 10% below the April 2019 figure of 180.616. Confirming the market recovery is hitting a bump, the the Seasonally Adjusted Annualised Rate of sales (SAAR) is down to 1.66 million units this month vs. 1.91 million in March and 1.84 million in February. Year-to-date volumes are now up 44.8% year-on-year to 546.790 units.

Toyota Motor sales are up 272.2% year-on-year in April and up 1.1% on April 2019, with the Toyota brand up 263.3% and Lexus up 359.1%. Hyundai-Kia is up 312.6% with Hyundai up 276.2% but down -10.6% on April 2019 and Kia up 373.5% year-on-year and up 8.1% on two years ago. Genesis is up 570.7% year-on-year and 82% on two years ago. Honda Motor is up 366.5% year-on-year with Honda up 360.8% and Acura up 411.9%. Mazda surges 480.4% year-on-year and 9.5% on April 2019 while Subaru is up 303% year-on-year but down -0.4% on two years ago. Volvo advances 303.5% year-on-year.

Model-wise, great performers include the Kia Sportage (+715%), Mazda CX-5 (+569.9%), Kia Forte (+503.9%), Toyota RAV4 (+453.1%), Honda CR-V (+442.5%), Subaru Crosstrek (+410.3%) and Hyundai Kona (+368%).
